Compare Products & Services to Cut Costs

Hard economic times

We work hard for the money, and it’s our money.

In these current economic times, we all need to think about how we can cut costs and save money. Maybe we even want to save for a long-earned holiday?

If you’re thinking, hell yes, then don’t worry, you’re not alone!

The first rule in cutting costs though is simply to shop around and not presume that the [insert appropriate company] salesman is giving you the best deal!

Well actually, that’s probably the second rule. The first being – do I even need whatever it is I’m about to spend my money on? :P

How to compare offline

Well, I’m sure this part doesn’t really need explaining.  But let’s start with – “the price on the ticket, isn’t always the price”.

Other than your local supermarket, chemists etc where haggling isn’t entertained, that’s not the case when it comes to factory outlets, electrical and furniture stores etc.  In fact, some are known to give you a better price just for asking, or for cash.  Some advertise that they will match – or better still, beat – any advertised price.  Of course, the success of your price haggling can sometimes come down to having the gift of the gab.

Did you know even some real estate agents and banks fees are negotiable.  No, not without asking you don’t.

Buying a big ticket item?  Grab all the usually annoying junk mail delivered and check prices. Call them and ask for their best price. Check online too see if you can find any web specials.

Basically, see who’s offering what and haggle their socks off!

Compare prices online

Comparison sites…  There are many online sites now where you can compare products and services.  Bear in mind that not all comparison sites are unbiased.

Whilst some are independent, some may be paid commissions by specific companies, or only suggest bigger name brands etc.  Use them as a guide, but do your own research as well.

A good way to find them online is by searching with terms like this “buy cheap [name of item]” or “compare prices for [name of item]”

Comparison sites

Here’s a list of a few comparison sites I have checked out or used in the past:

  • MyShopping – comparison online shopping
  • HelpMeChoose – Private Health and Life Insurance, Home Loans and Credit Cards
  • PrivateHealth.gov.au- Private health comparison site – no fees paid to funds!!
  • ShopAround – Utilities, Savings, Loans and Credit, Insurance
  • ShopBot – comparison online shopping
  • Shopping.com – comparison online shopping
  • YouCompare – broadband, home phone, mobile phone, pay tv

So, don’t be a fool and pay top price for anything.  Do a little research and you might just get the best bargain going!
